Serendipity Files 1

Feb 2010
Once upon a time.. In fact it was just this morning, a beautiful sunny morning at that, a certain young man by the name of Julius_Ominus stirred in his bed and looked over at the sundial in his yard with a sleepy yawn. Suddenly he sat bolt upright and looked at the sundial again.. "Nine in the morning already?!?!" He leaps out of bed and scrambles to his wardrobe, yanking on his ragged peasant's clothes, and throwing a few pounds into a small sack he dashes for the door, quickly locking it. It's the day he's been waiting for - the day in which he finally travels again, he has sat around in Girvan for a long time now.

After his father's death and then the rapid take over of their estate, followed by the extermination of his family, he had went into hiding and mourned the death of those he loved. Praying that the ones responsible may one day be bought to justice he had taken refuge in the abbey, where the kindly monks had given him some bread and 50 pounds to help him on starting a new life. Travelling to Girvan he had taken to keeping a low profile, working in the mines often until he could eventually afford a wheat field.

As the weeks, and eventually months, had passed, the pain of his loss - the loss of father, mother and wife - had lessened to a dull throb in his chest, well at least that was how he looked on the outside. Inside, however, the blow was still painful, a sharp jab in his heart whenever he thought upon them. One day as he was talking to one of the monks, the father who had helped him in his time of great need, Julius had mentioned the hurt of his loss still being there. The father, in his wisdom, had suggested a short journey may work as a salve to mend his broken heart.

So here he found himself placing some of the money he had managed to save in the hands of a laborer - payment for looking after his fields in his absence - and shortly later he slipped, unnoticed, past the lazy guards at the gate and headed away from the city of Girvan. He looks around and smiles, the birds were happily chirping in the tree's and it was a lovely sunny day with a nice cooling breeze, in all respects a perfect day to begin his travels. For once he feels free, perhaps the first time since running for his life, and certainly the first time since he adopted the name of Ominus to help him avoid detection by the evil ones.

A few days later he comes in sight of Kirkcudbright, and feeling extremely thirsty, he makes a beeline for the tavern.

Serendipity finds herself in a fervent conversation with one Darian Green when she sees a handsome young man enter the Church Key.

However, she's too distracted by her conversation with Darian to pay him that much notice. "Can we not talk about your personal experiences with Campbell any more Darian? . . . but the conversation continues for a quite a while anyway.

After grabbing himself a beer the ominous stranger sits down next to her. She does not mind and smiles at him. "Welcome to Kirkcudbright stranger."

Although he doesn't comment that much on the conversation he does offer some clever comments from time to time. She tells Darian that her neighbor Alistair is a Campbell and just seems to be an amazing example of a responsible and kind man. . . .

Serendipity nods at the mayor from time to time and at the end of their conversation he asks her to be the new bartender in the Key. "Indubitably Klovn!" she proclaims pretty quickly and she jumps behind the bar.

When the mysterious young man follows her and comes to sit at the bar she smiles. Oh, he likes me I think. She was already a bit distracted by him. He was mysterious and seemed to be ahead of everyone as far as conversation went, but there was something else about him. He wasn't obviously hitting on her like she was used to. He seemed "stealthy".

She says, "You know you're driving me just a little bit crazy Dear. I don't know what to make of you. Are you dangerous or a knight in shining armor? . . . And why take notice of me?"

Ominus smiles at her and says, "Well, not everyone has eyes like yours . . . that reflect like deep moonlit pools, lips like the dew laden rose and skin as soft as the finest silk . . . and who else has the smile like the rising sun that creates light and warms the heart?"

Serendipity stops her work and sits silent. Her heart beats a fast and her mind stops in it's tracks as she absorbs the comment. She just stares at him in disbelief. While she can't speak, she does manage a very quite "Wow."

The other ladies in the bar stare at him open mouthed also. However, the new comer just sits in silence and drinks his beer, as if he'd said nothing shocking at all.

After a few minutes Serendipity finally can speak thoughtfully again. "So, what brings you to us Ominus?"

She thinks to herself. Oh Jah. I hope he doesn't travel tonight.

Julius listens to a conversation that's going on in the tavern as he takes a seat next to one of the ladies, he's heard such discussions before about the clans and doesn't pay too much attention to some of them anymore, other than the odd comment. He's a bit tired from the journey but a drink of the good stuff normally aids recovery he has found, and so walking to the bar he looks around for a bartender - unfortunately there wasn't one in sight and he poured himself a beer, leaving his coin on the counter.

Suddenly he comes out of his revery to hear a new bartender announced, and the young lady next to him stood up from the dimly lit table, and steps into the brighter lights by the bar, as the light falls on her face he blinks. She is quite a stunning woman and spoke with a fair amount of knowledge earlier, interested he rises to his feet he follows her, she is the bartender after all and one ale wasn't enough by any means.

The bartender smiles at him as he orders another beer and asks why he took notice of her. Ominus finds himself smiling back and answers "Well, not everyone has eyes like yours . . . that reflect like deep moonlit pools, lips like the dew laden rose and skin as soft as the finest silk . . . and who else has the smile like the rising sun that creates light and warms the heart?"

Julius raises his mug to take a draught of his ale, using the mug as cover to look at the woman behind the bar, it really is true what he said, not just mere flattery, it has been a long time since he saw beauty such as hers. He almost laughs as she appears stunned but keeps his face neutral, betraying nothing as he finishes the ale with a smile, placing his mug aside.

"What brings me to Kirkcudbright? Well that was the spirit of adventure that started me on my journey, I think I stopped here because of the scenery, and I may hang around for a few days, the people here certainly seem of a higher quality than others I've met." Julius smiles and leans back in his chair, closing his eyes for a few moment, he feels rather relaxed here, more so than he did In Girvan - and perhaps the new name may just work, no-one has seemed to recognise him yet.

Julius looks at her and nods as she repeats part of what he said, listening as she continues, commenting about it being a great town. Julius watches her quietly, listening to the lovely sound of her voice, and watching the sparkle in her eye.He is sure that a knowledgeable and caring personality rests beneath her surface also, one that intrigues him and one that he hopes he may get the opportunity to explore more. He swallows slightly as she rests her chin on her left hand, is she looking at him in that way? Surely not, his imagination must just be jumping to conclusions being in the presence of such a extraordinary appearing woman.

Julius smiles as she asks if she'll see him again, and gives her a wink "Well. I certainly hope so, M'lady, I hope so very much indeed" Julius thinks to himself he may put off visiting the other towns for a day or two - this woman intrigues him and he desires to find out a little more about her. He watches her smile and his heart skips a little, her smile is like the sun's rays, it warms the heart and makes you want to smile back, and so he does.

Julius looks at her "So, m' lovely lady, tell me a bit about yourself?" He sits there watching her face, sure that whatever her story is it will be interesting to say the least. His hand strays across the bar top and touches her finger tips lightly before he moves his hand away to take hold of the fresh mug of ale waiting there. As he takes a sip he continues to study her, she has slightly curly long golden hair, soft skin and eyes that are a lovely shade of blue. He smiles just a little sadly as he remembers his now dead wife, but blinks the thought away and awaits her reply.

He winked at me? She feels a little bit tingly seeing it. Then he smiles back at her. Wow. He's much better looking than I first gave him credit for . . . and in the light near the bar she can better see his face and even his scruffy beard. She lovesscruffy beards. She feels the urge to reach out and pet it, but she resists.

"So, m' lovely lady, tell me a bit about yourself?"

She takes her head off her hand and pulls a stool up to the inside of the bar so she can sit properly and hold a conversation. After she does this his hand strays across the bar and touches her fingers. She pauses and tries not to look down at it . . . . or to smile . . . which would make her feelings obvious. He takes his hand away quickly to drink his beer though. Ah! Why'd he do that? It leaves her wanting more and she has to regain her composure before she can even begin to think of what to tell him.

She takes a sip of beer for some courage before continuing. "I'm not sure what you'd want to know. I'm just a meager bartender . . . Well, not until about 5 minutes ago, but still." She laughs and smiles a bit. She is quite happy to be behind the bar.

She thinks maybe I shouldn't tell him too much . . . Let him mire in mystery and wonder about what made me who I am.

Julius watches her subtly as he touches her hand, looking for any reaction, but none is soon coming, save the slight twitch of the jaw, but that could be either a good or a bad sign. He smiles slightly himself, she is a bit of a challenge to read, nevertheless, a challenge isn't always a bad thing. As a matter of fact he welcomes one at this stage, it's been far too long since he's had to engage any amount of intellect in reading people.

He waits as she takes a sip from her drink and then speak "I'm not sure what you'd want to know. I'm just a meager bartender . . . Well, not until about 5 minutes ago, but still." Julius laughs, he is sure there is far more to this woman with the infectious laugh than she lets on, a simple bartender indeed...

"Well you certainly fulfill the purpose of making the tavern brighter and more appealing" He comments quietly, chuckling as he thinks at the very least she improves the scenery largely. Julius thinks perhaps he'll have to ask around town about her, see what facts he can find out about this alluring woman, she certainly has him intrigued.

"Well you certainly fulfill the purpose of making the tavern brighter and more appealing."

She beams hearing such a compliment. There is no hiding her smile this time. She can hear him chuckling under his breath and it makes her giggle. Still, she doesn't want him to think he's already won her over.

"You flatter me Mr.Ominus. Of course I certainly hope that's not my only skill set. . . . a lighting fixture."She smiles and winks at him and places some beers on a tray, getting ready to deliver them.

Julius struggles to maintain his calm and collected look as she smiles, it makes his heart beat faster, but he can't let her know that he has already completely fallen for her charms. "Well, I'd really have to find out a bit more about you before I could determine your other skill sets wouldn't I, M'lady?" Julius groans inwardly as the line comes out of his mouth, could he have come up with a worse line?!

Julius watches her as she takes the beers and places them on the tray, and as she moves off to serve the other patrons he looks at his empty mug and mutters away to himself "Well, I really don't think I did her justice with my description of her earlier, she seems to be so much more than just a pretty face. A woman with an air of mystery and a deep personality" Ceasing his muttering, for fear of being overheard by the woman in question he sits back and looks across the bar, deep in thought, his brow furrowed.

He thinks back on the past two days since he left Girvan, and while he has slight fears that his fields may be mismanaged he doesn't regret leaving there to go on this short adventure. He's met a few good folks along the way, not least of whom is this charming and intriguing bartender. Ominus rubs his chin, feeling the few days of scruffy growth pushing through, and decides that Dumfries can do without him paying them a visit during this journey. After all, he's not one to leave something alone when his interest has been aroused.

"Well, I'd really have to find out a bit more about you before I could determine your other skill sets wouldn't I, M'lady?" She tries not to giggle too much as she thinks, If only he knew what my best traits were. Ha ha ha. He would already have tried to sweep me up to his room.

She finishes loading her tray of beer and moves off to serve the patrons. She just loves being the new bartender. She's always in here anyway. She might as well do something useful for the town while she's at it.

She serves her drinks and watching the ominous stranger out of the corner of her eye.

Julius watches her as she serves the drinks and then, as she begins to make her way back to the bar, he climbs to his feet and gently places his hand on her arm, so as to catch her attention. "Excuse me, I don't suppose you know if there are any rooms going for a good price in this town?" Julius is aware of the softness of her arm as his hand rests on it. As he asks her the question his gaze flicks to those amazing eyes of hers, eyes with a beautiful depth, eyes that seem to draw you in, eyes that reflect a passion, reflect the very fire burning within her.

Julius feels his heart beating rapidly and hope it's not audible enough for her to hear, these feelings of attraction flooding him aren't anything new, but it has been a long time since he last felt them and then to have them return so strongly and suddenly in the presence of this woman... He's not felt them this strong since his wife of two years died 3 years ago in the massacre of his family. Julius shakes his head to clear the bad memories springing to mind and looks back at the beautiful woman.. This woman, Serendipity, has been a welcome distraction indeed.

As *jsem vulgární hovado* comes back to the bar she sees Ominus looking at her tentatively. As she reaches the bar, he comes to his feet and steps toward her. Oh my Jah! He's gonna kiss me. She braces herself.

Instead he puts his hand gently on the side of her arm, causing her to stop her train of thought as he has instantly stolen her attention. She stands stiff as he speaks: "Excuse me, I don't suppose you know if there are any rooms going for a good price in this town?" For a moment they are locked in a gaze. She sees how truly memorizing his eyes are and how strong his features are this close to her. The strength of his stance makes her think he is more than meets the eye. He has an inner strength and confidence that is not common. This observation increases her admiration for him.

He is still staring her directly in the eye and she thinks for sure her growing attraction for him will cause her to take some passionate action, but instead he looks away after a moment. She takes a deep breath as he has broken the tension.

She thinks A room. A room? Oh yes. He had a question. She was suddenly aware that his warm hand was still on her arm. She likes being connected to him, and hopes she's not completely transparent.

"There are two empty rooms upstairs," she finally says.

She walks over to the bar, losing his touch by doing so. "It's five pounds per night I think." She smiles at him and finds a key behind the bar. "Oh good. Here it is." She holds up the key and brings it over to him.

She steps closer to him so that they are now only centimeters apart. She hopes that the closer she gets the more he will be attracted to her and not quickly forget her. She looks down to find his hand. She takes his right hand and places the key in it slowly. Then she looks up at him without moving her head up. The doe eye trick that has gotten her this far in life.

She smiles warmly and says, "I'm sure you'll like it. I've seen the rooms before . . . and I'll be here in the tavern first thing tomorrow. Will you be retiring for the night then?"

She hoped he wasn't going to bed. She wanted him to stay, but closing wasn't that far off. They both had to sleep eventually.

Julius smiles as she returns from behind the bar with keys to the one of the rooms she mentioned, he had been quietly hoping they had some rooms available here, it looked like a well kept establishment (more so than some he's slept at in the past anyhow).

She stops just short of him and then turns her eyes upwards, Julius swallows - that look of hers seems shy, yet maybe she's attracted to him? Maybe even as much as he feels drawn to her? Julius finds himself wishing that this is indeed the case, she's managed to capture his attention in such a short time and he feels himself attracted to her. Julius watches her for a moment, she's extremely beautiful, but she also seems to have a depth to her, qualities that others lack, she looks as though she isn't as shallow as some of the arrogant woman he's met. He would like to think that over the years he's become a good judge of a person's character, and to him this woman seems to be on of those that falls outside the normal category, something sets her apart from others, he's sure in part that it's due to the intelligent glimmer in her eyes.

He's broken from his thoughts as he feels a soft touch and looks down to his hand, Seeing her hand resting there, and his heart leaps - Did..did she just takes his hand?!? He glances again however and realizes she's only handing him the key to the room, he blushes slightly, hoping his feeling of disappointment haven't made themselves visible on his features. "Oh..Uh..yes, thank you. I'll take your word for the rooms being of a fine quality, if they're anything like this establishment's staff then I'm sure I'll have a good night. And yes, I think I shall retire - it has been a long journey."

Taking the key from her hand Julius places the 5 pounds rent in it's place and bids the few other patrons left goodnight. Then he begins to climb the steps, stopping for a moment to look back at Serendipity standing there and then continues up to his room, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.

As he places the money in her hand her eyes widen, but she tries not to change her expression. She's almost expressionless.

Her eyes follow him as he says good night and he is halfway up the stairs before she says anything. She manages to mumble a quiet "Good night" back to him.

Can't wait to see him tomorrow, she thinks.

Julius awakens to find the light streaming through the window, it's warm rays resting on his face. Rubbing the sleep from his eyes he raises his body into an upright position and swings his feet off the edge of the bed. Looking around the room he takes the time to study the furnishings, he was exhausted last night to pay much attention to anything except the soft goose down mattress. Ominus glances around, the bed was certainly comfortable and the rug at his feet is soft and warm, the armchairs are in good condition and appear of more than acceptable quality.

Noticing the screen in the corner he heads in that direction and, hoping it's a basin, he unbuttons his shirt and tosses it over the back of the nearest chair. Walking past and behind the screen he smiles, his assumption is confirmed, there rests a basin of cold water just waiting for use by the waking guest. Ominus dips his hands into it, and with a deep breath, splashes it upon his face. The shock of the cold water shakes the grogginess from his mind.

Ominus towels off his face, and flicks the last droplets of water from his hair, smiling as he wonders what type of breakfast they serve in this inn. Feeling hungry now he throws on his shirt, and buttoning it up he begins to make his descent down the stairs. Seeing the lovely bartender standing behind the bar he gives her a smile and a pleasant nod of greeting as he walks in her direction"Good Morning."

He stops just in front of the bar and sneaks a subtle glance at her as he takes a seat, she looks even more beautiful than last night, he wouldn't have thought it possible, but in this instance he doesn't mind being provedwrong. "I don't suppose there's any breakfast still available, Ma'am?" He's unsure of the time, but, judging by the activity he saw out the window it could be late morning. Ominus hopes breakfast hasn't yet passed, but if it has he may just have to settle for a large lunch.

Serendipity is cleaning up the bar after a few patrons when she hears the familiar sound of someone coming down the stairs. Her heart jumps a little in anticipation for she knows it's that handsome gentleman from last night. Realizing she's stopped working, she quickly starts moving plates away and goes about getting out new glasses nonchalantly.

She sees him when he hits the bottom of the stairs. He has a newly washed face and his shirt isn't completely buttoned. His hair is damp and his smile radiant. She tries not to swoon as his wet curls embrace his face. Oh, how she wants to kiss that face! She smiles a lovely smile at him.

"Breakfast? Oh, yes. It's still breakfast . . . . Isn't it always alright to have breakfast?"She finds herself rambling. Stay on the subject.

"I have sev'ral things you might like to try. Of course there's eggs and sausage, which I fry fresh. We also have some fruit, pancakes and cinnamon rolls that I made not too long ago. They should still be warm."

She quickly realizes she's forgotten the most important item. "Oh! Of course we have juice delivered every morn. Would you like some?" Dear Jah woman. Pull it together.

She smiles up at him, hoping he'll order what's not on the menu.

Ominus looks at her and feels his throat constrict a little, her radiant smile fully captivated his attention, and he just admires her for a moment before dropping his gaze slightly to the benchtop before she catches him staring.

"Hold on.. she was speaking wasn't she? what did she say? It must have been something in reply to my breakfast question .. but what? Most likely a list of available items, but for the life of me I can't remember. I really have to listen even if she is mesmerizing.. those luscious lips and eyes. ARRGH! Come on man, think! What did she say? Some sort of item list, but what was on it?"

Ominus gives up wrestling with his thoughts and looks back at her, putting on a decisive smile to mask the fact he missed her whole breakfast menu "Well you know, it all sounds so lovely.. If it wouldn't be too much hassle could I order everything?" He watches her face in interest as he places his large order, only being able to imagine what might be going through her head, yet he's fully aware of what is going through his own "I know what I really would like to order, something truly lovely, but I'm sure it wasn't in her list of menu items. I just hope she doesn't think me a pig for placing such a large order."

While he waits he looks out the window at the almost clear skies, the few clouds present of the cumulus fractus type. The sun is warm enough and the wind appears to be gentle judging by the barely present sway of the sapling's leaves and branches. All in all he judges it to be a nice calm, sunny day with a little cloud cover, but without rain. Now he just has to think of something to do on this lovely day in Kirkcudbright, perhaps.. no.. surely not.. well, maybe..

She watches his face contort as he thinks. It is like she can see cogs moving in his head. She thinks I did rattle the menu off rather quickly being so flustered. I hope I haven't given him too much to think about all at one time . . . I'm sure I was slurring. Maybe he didn't even understand me.

When he finally does say something he orders everything. She watches as he looks nonchalantly out the window. Is he for real? She smiles and tries not to giggle. Is he that hungry?

She looks up at him and sees that his eyes are lit up by the morning light coming into the window. They are just amazing all lit up like that. She takes a deep breath and realizes that she's staring. She blinks away the dreamy distraction of this image, trying to concentrate on her job.

She thinks maybe he doesn't realize how much food is involved. Oh well. Now he can try everything. The way to a man's heart is his stomach, right? She pulls out her notepad and begins writing and confirming his order.

"So, two eggs and sausage with a side of fruit . . . (cinnamon apples today) , a pancake, and a cinnamon roll. . . with a large glass of orange juice."

Before he can answer her she pulls out a large glass and goes to get a pitcher of juice.

Ominus sits there watching as she goes about the task of preparing breakfast and smiles, glancing at the sway of her hips as she moves and thinking to himself "The grace with which that woman moves.. she makes cooking look like an art form, a dance, more than a task that needs doing" Taking a sip of the glass of fresh juice she'd bought him earlier he smiles again, there is no doubt in his mind about how he desires to spend the rest of his day.

As she places the plate stacked with the sausages, eggs and cinnamon apples next to his left hand, and the pancakes and cinnamon roll at his right he looks up at her and smiles his thanks. As Ominus smiles he notices the ray of sun that were warming him also filtering through her hair, giving it a glorious shine, he swallows, forcing
his gaze down and taking a bite of the first thing his eyes fell on - a golden brown pancake with sweet syrup and butter dripping down the side.

Looking up at her again after a few bites he smiles, a little surprised to see her still standing there, perhaps she's awaiting his verdict "You're, ah..*ahem* They're lovely, thank you." feeling the colour creeping up the back of his neck at his slip of the tongue he smiles slightly at her, he may as well ask now..

Taking a deep breath, he reaches out and puts it quickly on top of hers on the countertop - before she can turn to leave - and asks the question he'd been thinking of all morning "I don't suppose you would be available on the morrow to show a traveler the sights of town, and perhaps even be willing to join him on a picnic?'" He flashes a charming smile up at her, sincerely hoping that she'll say yes, he would love to spend more time getting to know this woman who appears so intriguing and interesting.

As she prepares his food she puts more thought into it than she normally would. She can feel his eyes on her as she cooks. She hopes she's giving off a vibrancy because that's how she feels.

She presents the food to him when she's done and smiles at him. She wants to see him enjoy it. After he takes a bite he says: "You're, ah..*ahem* They're lovely, thank you."

She smiles as she hears his slip of the tounge. Mmmmmm. This information will prove very helpful to me. Leaning on the counter she is caught off guard when he reaches out and puts his hand on top of hers. She looks down at her hand and then at him. She smiles involuntarily.

He says: "I don't suppose you would be available on the morrow to show a traveler the sights of town, and perhaps even be willing to join him on a picnic?'" Oh that smile . . . He's so handsome . . . and it doesn't take very long before her smile says "yes" to him. Her heart speeds up just a bit as she thinks about spending an afternoon with him.

"Well, I am available in a few hours. I would be happy to take you on a tour and a picnic. I have some delicious goodies at home that I'm sure you'll appreciate."

She gives him another deep glance hoping to infiltrate his mind and fill it with thoughts of her that he can appreciate later. For now she waits for his answer.

Ominus feels his heart leap as she smiles "She's going to say Yes! Jah is really smiling upon me today!" looking at her he beams brightly "That also sounds fantastic, I might just take a short walk to the market I saw on my way into town the other day and pick up a few supplies. How about I meet you here at.. say.. one hour past noonday?"

After he has finished his scrumptious breakfast he takes a journey to the local market center and begins perusing the stalls present, finally settling for a few freshly cooked loaves of bread and a bottle or two of wine that the gent ensures him is very fine indeed. Getting back at approximately noon he ascends the stairs, and reaching his room he places his purchases by the door and slips out of his rather well-worn shirt.

Rummaging through his sparse luggage he lifts out his clean set of garments, and begins to slip into them, placing his current set on a chair, since they're due to a weekly wash on the morrow. Sitting in one of the comfortable armchairs he rests his head back and sighs contentedly as he thinks over the recent events, he really can't believe his good fortune, to have met someone so intriguing in only the second town he reached.

Straightening his coat he tucks the bottle of wine into one of the spacious inner pockets and heads down the stairs a little early, he hates to arrive late for anything (except maybe his funeral, he has no objections to arriving late for that). Taking a deep breath as he steps from the last step he hopes he doesn't miss this up by putting his foot in anything, 't would be a foul end to such a recent run of good fortune.

*jsem vulgární hovado* throws yet another dress on her bed. A pile of four lays across it now. She makes a pouty face and sits on the side of her bed.

"Nothing looks right . . . stupid . . . " She thinks about his smile, his charm. "I don't own anything good enough for a date with him." She thinks about what they'll be doing, a tour and a picnic.

It's casual *jsem vulgární hovado*. Just wear a short skirt and he won't notice the rest. The wise words she once heard echo in her mind. She quickly finds her shortest skirt and a top to match. She lays them on the bed and puts on her stockings and garter so they don't slip down. If he gets a peek at my garter I'll have quite the advantage, she tells herself.

"Perfect!" He'll be too distracted to notice that I don't own any nice jewelry. She dresses fully, grabs a small basket and runs out the door.

Ominus looks up from where he's leaning against the wall next to the door and almost does a double take as he notices Serendipity walking in his direction. If he'd thought the young woman had looked lovely before... Stepping forward he takes her hand and raises it to his lips, kissing it gentlemanly as he casts an admiring and plausive eye over her figure, not leering but silently admiring her natural beauty. With a slight wink at the lovely lady he comments "I must say you look very.. Alluring"

Absently he reaches up and brushes a loose strand of her hair back behind her ear, but suddenly realizing that she mayn't have appreciated his unreflective touch he lowers his hand back to his side, a bit unsure what he'd been thinking, she'd just looked so tantalizing.. Ominus looks down at the ground for a moment, before turning his gaze to her face and smiling apologetically. "What's inside, or is it a secret?" he asks with a chuckle as he nods towards the basket.

Serendipity walks toward the Key and sees a handsome man in the doorway. "Is that him? I think so." She looks down at the ground a bit so as not to stare directly in his face as she approaches. Once she sees him watching her though she smiles his way and takes her steps carefully.

He kisses her hand and she lets out a barely detectable giggle as she's so pleased to see how respectful he is. She also enjoys his touch. His lips are soft and warm. So welcoming. He seems to love what she chose to wear. I'm so glad I chose black. Of course I'm still not as mysterious as he is.

Suddenly she notices him reach for her face. She's unsure what to do, a deer standing in the forest. He moves a strand of her hair and she almost melts. However he moves away too quickly for her taste. He looks up smiling and asks what's in her basket. She wants to say man candy, but keeps the joke to herself.

"It is . . . a secret M'lord," she says teasingly. "I think you'll like my cooking though."

"So, do you want the short tour or the long tour from your tour guide . . . Serendipity?" She smiles, as it's the first time she's told him her name.

"Cooking? You now have me intrigued, ma'am." Ominus smiles charmingly at her, his mind already leaping to conclusions about what could possibly be inside, hopefully something that goes well with the wine tucked away within the deep pockets of his dark coat.

Ominus smiles widely as he hears her name, and mulls over it in his head, testing the sound of it, "Serendipity.. Ah, Lady Serendipity, it is indeed a pleasure to at last learn your name. I'm.. I'm known as Ominus" A wave of sadness flickers across his features as his mind returns, for a few moments, to the name he used to have, the title he once held, and can have no longer. Swallowing, he shakes his head, willing the memories from his thoughts, shoving them back out to the recesses of his mind.

Ominus offers her his arm, hoping he's not being overly presumptuous in assuming she'll take it "I think; perhaps just seeing a few of the key, must-see attractions should be sufficient?" Ominus sneaks another glance down at her dress and smiles, it is certainly an attractive one.

"Serendipity.. Ah, Lady Serendipity, it is indeed a pleasure to at last learn your name. I'm.. I'm known as Ominus" She looks down trying not to look him in the eye because then she might blush. She thinks about the name Ominus. It's original and she enjoys the witticism.

Is that his real name? If so it's pretty odd. . . It certainly fits the mystery of this tall dark man.

As she's thinking to herself he presents his arm to her. "I think; perhaps just seeing a few of the key, must-see attractions should be sufficient?" She smiles up at him and wraps her arm around his, thankful to be close to him. She giggles a little and comments, "Oh good. That will give us plenty of time to chat and eat the treats. Mmmm. . . . and they are a surprise. You do like surprises, don't you?"

As they start walking south she leans into his arm. "Well, you've seen the Church Key. It serves as the north star of my mental map of the town. The town would not be Kirkcudbright without it . . . . . . . . "

Ominus nods, smiling, as the tour begins, watching and listening as she points out the various sights of the town. However, as time passes, he finds himself looking more at the woman beside him, than at the sites she's indicating. Her presence really is rather intoxicating, and his mind has taken a slight detour for a few moments, returning just in time to hear her mentioning something about the town founder as she points out the statue in the town center. "Ah I see, he sounds like he was a well-respected gentleman here." He nods, and tries to pay more attention to the sights of the town, rather than the musical qualities of her voice.

He looks at her arm for a moment, linked through his, gesturing towards a second statue a few meters from the first, he gently slips his hand into hers, entwining his larger fingers amongst her daintier ones. "And that one?" he asks - almost as a distraction to avoid her noticing his subtle taking of her hand.

"This one is uh . . ." She's distracted by his hand. Finally she breaks down laughing. "I have absolutely no idea. Hahahaha!" She laughs wholeheartedly and slaps her thigh.

"I'm afraid I don't know about this one Dear. I haven't lived here all that long." She grips his hand a bit as she's glad to be holding it. She smiles up at him.

"It's almost picnic time Dear Ominus. Let's take a look at the church and then I have a wonderful place picked out for our picnic."

Ominus laughs, not unkindly, as she admits that she's a bit unsure of that particular monument. "Ah, well. It's understandable that you won't know everything about this town, if you've not been here that long yourself." He feels the pressure of her hand in his increase a little and smiles, her hand is soft, her skin smooth. Ominus wonders again what more there is to this woman, if she only just moved here recently then there must certainly be some more to her story that he has yet to stumble upon. Ominus glances across at her, admiring her looks once again, her long flowing, wavy hair, falling across her shoulders like a golden waterfall. Swallowing he nods in response to her next sentence "That sounds like a fine idea to me, lead on, m'lady" With a slight bow of his head and a sweeping gesture of his free arm he motions for her to lead the way.

She leans on him a little as they walk down the path. Finally she brings him to the path where the church stands. "Isn't it grand?." she asks. "I've admired it since I moved here. Jah knows I've spent my time inside trying to find meaning in my life, volunteering, trying to make up for the mistakes I have made . . . . That seems like so long ago."

"Now my days are filled with happiness. It's quite a contrast."

Ominus looks at her, hearing what might be a touch of sadness in her voice as she re-visits the memory of the past, perhaps her past was similar in some way to his own? He nods in agreement to her question, the church is both grand and humble at once. Ominus stands staring over at the church for a few moments longer, listening to the thoughts rushing through his head...

Sadness, regrets, remorse, I used to think on them so often, almost every moment of every day, and now after just a short travel to this lovely town... The sights seem new and fresh, and this woman is helping to ease my mind greatly, her presence is rather quite soothing. And her beauty is.. well, exquisite.

Ominus dismisses his thoughts with a shake of his head and turns to her, smiling "It must be this town, I've become much more happy myself since arriving here."

Serendipity smiles at him. "I love it here. Isn't it just . . . beautiful? Only word I can think of for it. The people, the mayor . . . . they're all so kind and helpful. I've never been faced with negativity here. Perhaps that's why Jah saw fit to settle me here."

As they stood and admired the church a while she thought about the picnic spot she had all picked out. She really thought he would love it.

She pointed to the left. "It's this way to the glen I want you to see."

Ominus smiles charmingly at her, giving a slight nod "Lead on, M'lady". He falls into step beside her as she heads in the direction of the side path she'd previously indicated. Noticing two men walking towards them he smiles politely, giving them a nod of greeting, as is commonplace for two travelers meeting on the highway. Ominus then takes a few rapid steps to catch up with Serendipity, as she makes a sudden left turn down a wooded side path, which he assumes leads towards this glen she mentioned.

As he catches up with Serendipity he falls in step behind her, the thin path not being wide enough for them to walk side by side. He'd done this partially because of not knowing the way, and partially because of (although he'd never admit it) the.. pleasing view he got of her walking in that dress. As he walks along behind her the rest of the world fades off into the distance, it suddenly seems of far less consequence than it did a few days ago.. Suddenly he snaps back to reality, and, clearing his throat quietly he asks "Do I get a hint as to our destination?" He smiles, he doesn't mind the air of mystery about this woman - in fact he's enjoying the thrill of anticipation as he waits for her to reveal some of the surprises she'd mentioned.

Devanto pauses in the road and looks back over his shoulder at the couple that just passed, turning towards Doug he gives him a questioning look "Was that..?" He watches them turn off down a side path, and nods slightly. The gentleman's appearance is different. His hair is darker than it was on that magnificent day when the order destroyed the, once, Lord's family. Although his hair looks darker, and his clothes more simple, there is no mistaking his walk; that confident stride.

Devanto turns to his fellow member of the order and snarls "Doug, I thought we'd killed this senseless fool, along with the rest of his arrogant family. You know how the order hates loose ends, especially ones as dangerous as this ..." Here Devanto lets spill a string of profanities "Him and his troublesome, insubordinate family, they almost caused us to lose our hold on that land." Devanto scowls. If there's one thing the knight's family should have known, it was that the order does not relinquish power to any noble Lord attempting to take power from them. With a snarl he spits spitefully on the ground, grinding the phlegm into the dust of the road with the toe of his boot.

Devanto looks at Doug. Both of them have a powerful, yet not cumbersome build. The swords sheathed at their waist are kept keen and pristine. Upon the hilts are engraved their rank within the order. They had forged a friendship of sorts; each rising through the ranks alone, but fulfilling many assignments, more or less side by side. Their hard work had paid off. They had done their share of killing, and each had witnessed first hand the power with which the order moved. After the fall, or so they had thought annihilation of the Lad's family they had been each promoted to the rank of dread legion. The order had entrusted upon them a delicate task indeed. It was their responsibility to eliminate threats as they arose. With this responsibility had come the privilege of being able to choose their assignments, to act upon their own judgment, without requiring the council's express permission. Now the re-appearing of this gentleman was a threat to them all, though why he appeared here, and after three years, Devanto didn't know, but he did know what was now required of them.

"Well, my friend, it is time to end this. And let's ensure that this will be one death he does not return from." Devanto draws his sword, and with a nod to Doug he pulls up his cowl, letting his overcoat fall to the wayside. Hearing a quiet mutter from Doug as they stride quickly towards the path "It is time, indeed, to end this." He smiles sadistically, almost relishing the moment he takes the young cur from the face of this planet.

I can't believe it's him, but there he stands. Doug glares down the path. Walking nonchalantly . . . on a date. The gull.

Doug looked at Devanto as he spoke. They had a similar expression on their faces. They had both been there. He thought about that night, How can it be? I saw the dagger in his back. There was so much blood and he couldn't get up. I couldn't get near him with that sword in his hand, but I was sure the fire had finished him off.

I should have known he hadn't died! That brute took my best friend from me. He killed Secius, Protcus and Fallon. It took another three men to take him down. Phonex had been the one to block his sword from my chest and he died three days later.
He sighed, thinking of his old friend. He sadly mumbled his name, "Phonex".

A wave of anger covered his sadness: No! No way will this man go on living. He may be older now, but he's got a major weakness now. The woman. That delicate little thing. She'll be an easy hostage and we'll make him end his own life to protect her. Then, we'll end hers. He has no chance of escape this time.

"It is time, indeed, to end this."

As Ominus and Serendipity walk toward the glen she answers his question: "Nope. You get no hints Dear Julius. That would ruin the surprise now, wouldn't it?"

She didn't need him knowing what wonderful things she had in store. Perhaps if I impress him he'll stay in town with me, she thought.

She almost skips down the path as they make their way toward her surprise picnic area. As Ominus stops at the bottom of the hill she sets down her basket to take a break and reorganize it. It is quite heavy and they are about to hike a small hill. As she repacks the basket she makes sure her baked goods are easy to grab. Everything still looks pretty presentable. Some things have shifted during the walk but nothing is crushed.

Good thing this basket will be light when we leave. She laughs. I wonder how much food he can put away. He sure ate a lot this morning. I wonder if he always eats that much. I hope I brought enough food.

While she is down kneeling at her basket she sees a couple of flowers that she'd like to put in a vase when she gets home. She reaches out to pluck them.

Ominus pauses as they reach the bottom of a small hill, he can hear a dull roar in the background, but his attention is drawn to a small cluster of wild flowers at the base of the hill - Blazing Star he believes they're called. Watching them for a moment, with their long stems swaying gently in the wind, and their dense cluster of small purple flowers in full bloom, he smiles lightly. Picking one of the flowers he moves towards where Serendipity has turned a bend in the path, hurrying to catch up. He rounds the corner, and the sight that hits his eyes causes him to halt mid-stride. Ominus stares in shock for a few moments at the unexpected sight, the flower falling to the ground as his grip upon it suddenly loosens.

Doug looks at the knife in his hand as he comes out from behind a bush. His knuckles turn white as he tightens his grip. He glares at the young gentleman. "You thought you were rid of us, didn't you young palsgrave?"

He walks slowly in front of the young man, between him and the lady admiring the flowers in the field. He steps forward. Now she won't even see him. He smiles and glares at Ominus with a deeply hateful look, but keeps his voice down. "Look at you . . all dressed up like a peasant. Laughable. Did you think you could hide from the Order?! Did you really think so?"

"We are everywhere."

"After all the things that you and your father did to defy us, did you think we would just let you live among the public like a common man?"

Doug takes in Ominus' surprised expression, I'm really going to enjoy this.

Ominus stands staring at the man dressed in the crimson garments, the colors of the order, his face a mixture of surprise and hatred. These men killed families, destroyed estates and murdered all who dared oppose them - all in the name of money and power. As the lowlife begins to speak Ominus' jaw sets in a hard line, he remembers this scoundrel's face from amongst the crowd of villains that had come for his family. Their faces were etched into his memory, they had haunted his dreams for weeks as he lay on the border between life and death. The dagger had fortunately missed most of his vital organs, but it had taken a long time to recover from nevertheless, Now all that remained was the ugly scar, and the even uglier memories.

As he listens to the man his hands strays towards the hilt of the sword at his waist, his fingers slowly curling around the hilt as he glares coldly at the intruder, waiting for him to finish speaking.

"I knew this day would come, although I must say I expected there to be far more than just the one of you. I assume from the small turn out that the Council is still unaware of my presence?" Ominus smiles slightly, if the council is truly still ingorant of the fact he's alive then perhaps he can continue on with his future plans. Now just to remove this single traitor who carries sole knowledge of his existence..

Devanto steps out from the undergrowth. He watches as his foe turns his body slightly, trying to locate his position.

"Ah, but he's not entirely alone, you little twerp." Devanto watches with satisfaction as the target contemplates his predicament. In an attempt to see them both the target has to keeps his head in an awkward position. Devanto gives him a malicious smile and takes a moment to examine his enemy.

"His build looks more powerful than it was three years ago. He may have been training since his recovery. Hopefully he's spent more time romancing ladies than training. He's armed with a sword . . .which is bad news. Doug only has a dagger today. No shield on the palsgrave this time though. That's good for us. Last time he had a shield and knew how to use it."Devanto sighed and a scowl appeared on his face now.

"How he survived with that dagger deep in his back I'll never know." Devanto feels a pang of uncertainty passing through him for the first time in years. Memories of the fighting skills of this man rush to the top of his thoughts. Devanto is thankful, however, for the fact that his foe is disadvantaged by the positions Doug and himself chose, forcing his attention to be divided.

Devanto keeps his face turned towards the ex-lord as he moves his eyes around, searching for the woman they'd seen early. Doug and himself are excellent swordsmen and fair in close combat, tempered by many battles. Still he would like any advantage he can get, especially against what's most likely a man filled with an extreme desire to mete out justice upon them. From his experience a hostage held gives you a vast upper hand, and what better hostage than one who seems to be loved by your enemy?

Serendipity has finished picking a handful of choice flowers when she hears a noise behind her. "Julius, I've found the most beautiful flowers in this clearing." She hears no reply. "Julius? Omi?" She turns her head and just as she thought, there is no one there. That's rather odd. Why would he disappear? She listens closely. There is nothing but silence. This does not bode well.

She reaches into her basket and takes a bread knife out. Better safe than sorry. There are wild animals out here. She puts the knife in her pocket, hoping it won't cut the fabric too much. Still, being alive is worth a torn skirt. She leaves the basket where it is. Then she cautiously walks back down the path. Surely her date is just gathering flowers and she is overreacting.

As she rounds the bend she sees Ominus, standing like a statue, his hand on the hilt of his sword. A snake?! There must be a big snake in the brush. She walks slowly to the left, watching Julius to see where the danger might be. He's looking at a tree and his eyes are moving to look at her, but there's nothing there in the brush near the tree. "What is it Dear . . . ?"

She sees him put out his left hand. "No, Seri don't . . "

She feels herself being grabbed from behind. A wave of panic rushes over her and she gasps loudly. She is quickly pulled backward and feels a knife on her throat. Then she sees Julius' face. She is both saddened and surprised by the emotions she sees in his expression. Then she sees him glare, a face of determination, of malice.

She wants to cry, for his face speaks volumes of his emotions. Surely I'm a dead woman. I'm sad that he cares for me. How terrible it would be for him to watch me die, as he stands helpless. I surely hope not.

She consults her body and grasps her attacker's right arm with her left. Whoever this man is he's very strong. She closes her eyes for a moment to think. Show no weakness Seri. She opens her eyes and looks at Ominus. She gives him a half smile as if to say It's okay Dear. We'll figure it out. If she is strong, he will be strong.

She sees another man behind Ominus though. This is not good. Still, confidence. Calm. She looks at him again and remembers the knife. She pats her pocket innocently, trying to give him the idea that she has it and to have faith in her.

He seems to nod and she can only assume that's what he's thinking.

She takes a deep breath and feels herself shaking from the adrenaline. Please Jah. Give me the strength.

Ominus looks between the two men. They certainly have him a bit disadvantaged with their positioning. He can barely keep an eye on both of them at once. He looks between them, calculatingly. They both appear to be veterans with the intent to make sure that he doesn't leave this place. However, only one of them appears to be armed with a sword; while the other one, the one who appeared first, only seems to have the rather lethal looking knife.

Go for the one with the sword, leaving the first one very little time to act. None of us are wearing armor, so I don't have to worry about any hits against him being ineffective. I can swing for the throat, which he will most likely block, failing to notice the kick that will knock his knee out of joint . .

His thoughts are suddenly broken as he hears Serendipity calling his name. His head lifts and he listens. Ominus bites back a curse as she rounds the bend. He silently prays that she doesn't venture any closer. It appears his prayers go unheeded, however, as she steps forward. 'The first man, where did he... Oh! There! - He's faded back into the bushes... out of her line of sight!'

Ominus suddenly turns his head fully towards her, throwing up his left hand as he calls out a warning "No, Seri don't.."but he realizes, even as he begins to speak, that he's too late. The traitor has leapt forward and captured her from behind.

Ominus swallows hard. A look of panic crosses his face; 'Dang!! What now? If I rush the second man then the first assailant will surely kill her, and if I move towards the first man then she'll likely be killed also..' He feels despair creeping into his mind. He can't stand the thought that she might be killed by these dogs that had come to murder him. He looks over at her sadly. She's a fantastic woman, beautiful and kind . . and to think he might now have caused her to lose her life . . . His face twists into a glare of hatred directed at the man holding her. Now, more than ever, this man must die.

He stands looking uncertainly at the charming woman, trying to find something to say, but no words come to him. The words don't exist to describe how sorry he is that she was pulled into this. Ominus opens his mouth, and all that comes out is a whispered "I'm.. sorry"; words she probably doesn't hear, but words he had to say. He knows nothing will make things right if she dies. He might not be able to bare it all again . . . Death may come to one, or both, of them today. Ominus realizes, with the thought sinking in, that he's actually more worried about her life than he is about his own.

Turning his head remorsefully he looks at her. Suddenly he notices her subtle gesture to her pocket. A sudden hopeful thought springs to his mind; 'If she's capable of using whatever weapon she has . . . Even if she only can manage to delay him a little while . . . perhaps we can both survive this..' Looking intently at her for a moment, to ensure he's read her gesture right, he notices the confidence she seems to have . . . a confidence that allows him to assure himself that she's okay, She can handle herself, at least for a while. Taking a slow breath he tightens his grip around the sword, readying himself for the right moment; his opportunity.

Doug is quite pleased how this has turned out. He has the lady at knife point and the Palsgrave has no where to run. This is so perfect. I couldn't have planned it better. Oh wait. I did plan it. He laughs to himself and smiles glaringly at the young man. He looks down at the girl, sweeping her hair to the left to get a better visual. Her peasant shirt and corset don't cover her that well. Mmmm. She is quite pleasing to the eye. Perhaps we should dispatch the young lord and then get that corset off. We could both have our way with her. Oh yes. I doubt Devanto would mind that. He's always game for some fun.

She seems quite docile. Perhaps she'll be easy to handle.
He runs his knife down her throat to her collarbone. She doesn't move at all. He looks down at the rest of her body.

Oh yes. That would be quite nice. My plan has just been revised. He chuckles to himself quietly.

Serendipity sees the look on Ominus's face as they communicate in a glance. He is ready, she thinks. So glad I grabbed this knife.

She wonders how best to distract her captor. She feels him move her hair. Then his breath on her neck. It's hot. She tries not to cringe. Then he moves his knife down to her collarbone. She starts to shake. The thought of him touching her; disgusting. She feels his eyes on her. I know what he's looking at and there's not exactly any way to adjust my top . . . and just like that . . an idea.

She manages to be as casual as possible and rudely spouts out: "Hey! This fellow paid for me all day, fair and square. If you two wanna join the party it will be extra. I wasn't paid for that, so you'll have to talk to the boss; Alistair. Yea . . He runs the brothel."

She motions to the man behind Ominus. " . . . and him. He looks mean enough but not tough enough to take Alistair. No. No. Ali's a really big man . . and he has employees if you know what I mean." She hopes her captor's eye follow her hand as she points at the man behind her beau. She puts her right hand in her pocket and grasps the knife tightly.

She feels her captor loosen his grip, as the wheels turn in his head. Now is the time.

She pulls the knife out quickly and puts both arms up and grabs her captors arm. He sees the knife and loosens his grip a bit. She grabs his arm tightly and holds it straight with all her might. She jumps up a little and hopes she is heavy enough. She pulls her legs up, so that all her weight is pulling this man down. She curls into a ball as he comes forward. She rolls to the right, as he falls toward the ground. He tries to tuck or catch himself, but he has a knife in one hand and has no where for his legs to go. His head goes straight onto a rock with a heavy thud sound.

Having done a somersault Serendipity quickly stands up next to him. The thud sound she heard was not a pleasant one. It was the most horrible sound she'd ever heard. She stands up still shaking and points the knife at him. She watches the knife shake in her hand. Her heart is pounding in her ears.

The man . . he's not moving. His head is bleeding and he's not moving. Is he . . ? She stands motionless and her knife falls to the ground.

Despite the situation Ominus has to bite back a smile as Serendipity begins to tell the ridiculous story to the man leering at her outfit. Noticing the quick flash of her arm as she begins her attack move he turns fully towards the second assailant; hoping fervently that she can hold her own.

Facing the swordsman, now more confident in his chances, he offers up a bitter smile and raises his sword; a sword held in a practiced and steady hand."Fiat justitia." And with these words he takes a step towards the man, a resolute expression upon his face. The order can't know he's still alive, it must remain believing he is dead.

He swings the sword from the left side, at chest height, a rather standard first move, and one the man in crimson deflects easily. They circle one another, both looking for an opening in the defense of their opponent..

Translation: Fiat justitia ~ "Let Justice be done"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Devanto enjoys a good fight. He opens his mouth with a smirk to the man circling him, "Your wife. You know she begged me to spare her... " He watched the young mans eyes. No doubt losing his family had a great effect on him. I can use that. He must be destroyed, he's still a great threat to us.

" . . . and your young son. She begged for his life too." Ominus twists aside at the last moment. Ah. Almost had him there.

Devanto can already taste the blood.

Ominus moves quickly, but a little too late when his opponent sends a rapid stab to his side. A rip of cloth is heard, but thankfully no searing pain spreads through his body. Ominus shakes his head as he knocks the man's sword away. 'Idiot.. Don't let him distract you, focus on the task at hand.'

"But I ignored her cries and beheaded them both as I shall now do to.. you" Ominus ducks even as he brings up his sword, deflecting the powerful blow. 'Don't listen' he tells himself, 'Just do what you know you have to'. Ominus then sweeps his sword downwards towards the man's stomach, surprisingly however, the man manages to agilely dodge out of the way. "You killed an innocent woman and child. The Order's problem was with me and my Father... It was not with them..." He pauses for a moment as he slashes his sword in a diagonal arc towards the man's torso, which is, again, blocked. "For this, and many other crimes...justice must be served. I do not seek revenge because I know killing you cannot give them back to me." He sends a quick jab at his opponent to keep him on his toes.

"What you have taken from me, you took forever."

Ominus glances at the man's face, a face that shows no remorse for his action, no shred of morality, no sense of right or wrong. He almost feels sorry for a man who has become so consumed by the lust of money and power that he had allowed it to corrupt his being...

Serendipity stands motionless next to the body of her captor. She shakes looking down at him. Her body is still full of energy from the attack she can barely believe she has just accomplished.

She feels her captor's chest. There is no movement - no breath. She kneels next to him, not knowing what else to do. "He's gone Seri . . and it was not your fault."

She hears Julius and the man from the Order talking. Soon they are circling each other. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. She thinks about this man she barely knows; Julius . . . and these men . . . they know him and everything about him . . . and she knows nothing.

I know nothing and yet . . I really want nothing more in this world. He is so magnificent and I won't lose him. . . I will not be a victim either and this . . this villian will not take Julius from me.

She looks up determined. No tears in her eyes, just a focus that she rarely shows; a focus she didn't know she had.

As she stands up she hears "Your wife. You know she begged me to spare her... " She sees Julius' face lose color and his profile changes from that of a kind, happy man to . . . devastation.

" . . . and your young son. She begged for his life too." Seri puts a hand to her chest and her eyes tear up completely. "No. It can not be." she whispers to herself. "Who? Who could do that?"

She looks up to see Julius regain his composure. She tries to regain hers as well, but this . . . revelation, it changes things. He is even more than she saw in him before. The losses he's suffered . . . but she must compose herself if she's to help him.

She stands up and puts the knife behind her back. If the fight goes bad she will use it. She won't lose all that she's found in this man, if Julius is even his real name.

Devanto studies his opponents face, it's a stern one - focused entirely on the job at hand. He launches an attack in frustration, raining a flurry of blows upon his enemy. 'Gah, this infernal fellow's been practicing, I can't get a hit in!'Devanto parries the return strike, feeling the shock travel up his arm 'And he's as strong as he was last time, if not more so . . '

He suddenly spots the opening he was looking for, and draws back his sword eagerly, aiming to swing for the gap in his opponent's defense. 'Ah, finally, he almost had me worried . . . . but now . . .'

Feeling a searing pain suddenly burn through him he blinks, not quite understanding it's origin. Glancing down his eyes fall upon the sword sticking from his chest. Turning to look at Ominus he notices the look upon his face, a world weary one, not the one of a man reveling in a revengeful victory, as he would have expected. As the sword falls limply from his hand, and his other one rises to touch the red spot rapidly spreading across the breast of his tunic, he looks at the man before him and feelings of fear begin to swamp him. 'All that I've gained . . . I took lives . . . so many . . for wealth and power. If I can't live to enjoy them . . . I thought it would make me happy, but now . . . now my work has only bought me death'

Raising his glance weakly to the man before him he speaks with a tongue that feels heavy, leaden, "Can you . . . forgive . . . me?" And his vision fades . . the image of this man becoming foggy. He notices a slight nod from Ominus, his lips moving. But Devanto can no longer hear the words. Darkness engulfing him he sinks towards the ground, tired, so . . tired.

Ominus draws his sword back and to the right, making it appear as though he is going to swing it in a wide arc, exposing his side in a tempting offer to the man before him. As the man takes the bait Ominus thrusts his sword forward, piercing through his chest. His opponent's face shows first pain and then shock, both of which are rapidly followed by disbelief. As Ominus releases his hold upon the hilt of his sword he turns his gaze upward from the sword to look into his opponent's face. A mix of feelings wash through him now, perhaps the foremost of these is, surprisingly, pity for his foe, followed by weariness. A sense of success; of victory, doesn't really even seem to appear on the scene.

Ominus looks over at Serendipity, for the first time since this fight began, and notices that she's standing alone, her assailant is nowhere to be seen. 'No. . Wait. There he is..is he dead? Well, I'm impressed, it seems this woman is full of surprises..' Suddenly a voice breaks into his thoughts "Can you . . . forgive . . . me?" Turning back towards the man kneeling unsteadily before him, he pauses, this man had helped in the killing of his family . . . But as the attacker wavers, beginning to slump forward, Ominus nods, he finds that in this moment he actually doesn't hate him as much as he thought he did "I. . . yes, I forgive you". With the giving of this forgiveness his heart seems to rise a little, as though a great weight is lifted. Ominus kneels down next to him and gently closes his open eyes.

Pulling his sword from the still body before him he wipes it upon the assailant's shirt , cleaning off the fresh blood 'He won't mind'. Ominus turns towards Serendipity and looks at her for a moment, unsure what to say.

Serendipity stands watching Julius engage in a brutal sword fight with this "man". She steps toward them slowly, watching with bated breath. Finally just when she thinks Julius might be in danger he stealthy stabs his foe. She puts her hand to her chest and gasps; half in relief and half in despair. The blood she sees coming from him. It flows out so fast and Julius does not seem surprised by it. She continues to slowly step forward, her heart in her throat. "Is Julius safe then? Is it over?" She looks around the pathway in front and behind her. There is no one. She breathes a sigh of relief.

She turns her head forward again when she hears a low voice speaking softly. Julius speaks to his downed enemy, although she can not hear him. He is solemn and stern. Does he know this man? What other horrible things has this man have done in his life? Seri finds no emotions overcome her. She just watches the man die. She feels hollow, completely devoid of her usual personality. Julius finally stands up and looks at her; his enemy at his feet. She takes a deep breath and just looks at him. She wants to smile at him but her face does not answer her.

She puts her head down as she remembers how she killed her own captor . . . by accident. She puts her arms in front of her now and looks at the knife in her trembling hand. She won't need it now. Will she?

"Julius, what . . . are you okay?"

Ominus looks at her for another moment before taking a step towards the woman, She's putting on a brave face but he can see the fear and confusion welling in her eyes, and he feels a wave of remorse surge through him. It's probably the first time she's killed a man, even if by accident, and he knows what a shock that can be. It's been a long time since he had to first kill an assailant in self defense, but he still remembers how much it shook him at the time - and to think he has now, inadvertently, put her through the same. He silently curses the order, 'Why couldn't they have let me be, allowed me a semi-normal life? Will I always be haunted by my past? Will it always return looking for vengeance?'

Sadly he raises his eyes to meet hers and, covering the last short patch of ground in a couple of strides, tenderly wraps his arms around her. "I'm.. sorry.." Ominus whispers quietly as he feels the sobs shake her body, he finds himself at a loss for words, how hard some feelings are to speak of.

Seri takes a deep breath as Julius walks toward her. His face is full of concern. As she's swept up in his arms she begins to feel safer, already comforted. She hears him whisper, "I'm . . sorry." As he holds her close and she feels safe in his arms, she finally let's go of the torment she was holding in. She sobs for about a minute as the experience of what just happened hits her. Two men lay dead, one at her hand. After a few deep breaths she stops crying and then tries to compose herself again.

"It's alright. It's all over now," she tells herself. She looks up at Julius. Despite the situation his thoughts only seem to be for her. Has she affected him so much? She takes a deep breath and looks him in the eyes. Tears stream down her cheeks and she uses his shirt to wipe them away.

"Julius, don't be sorry. Those men had no right." She dries her tears some more and tries to make a smile.

"You . . . you're a knight . . or a fighter of some kind. I've never seen a man use a sword like that before . . . and I've seen sword fights. You have even more secrets than I thought you might."

Seri didn't know what else to say. "Should I not mention his previous family? His wife and son. Were there more? Are they dead too?"

"Maybe it's best to wait until he's ready to tell me that. He doesn't travel with anyone. Yes. That's it. I will wait to ask him."

"Julius, I'm sorry to hear about your past but it does not bother me. Not after seeing . . these men. Someone as pleasant and kind as you are, I don't know how you came across them, but that doesn't matter. Truly you are an honest man . . . and how you stood up to them despite the odds, it was quite impressive."

"At some point we can talk about it some more, but that's up to you. I have no issues with facing your past . . the future . . together. You're the brightest thing I've seen in my future for a long time."

"Julius, don't be sorry. Those men had no right." Ominus watches as she dries her tears with his shirt, thinking angrily to himself 'No, no, they didn't. But then that's what the order does, doesn't it? That which they have no right to do!' But then she continues and he listens attentively "You . . . you're a knight . . or a fighter of some kind. I've never seen a man use a sword like that before . . . and I've seen sword fights." Ominus smiles sadly as she guesses correctly, giving a slight nod, a motion she doesn't see."You have even more secrets than I thought you might."

Ominus looks at her as she glances away for a moment, seemingly struggling with something. He takes this chance to think upon the questions bombarding his own mind 'Do I tell her? Tell her that I was a knight, an officer, a lord? Where do I even plan for this . . . relationship to go? I have come to care for her far more than I realized, and in the space of only a few days. She's extremely beautiful, and yet . . . there's so much more to her. Her passion and kindness are greater than I expected. Her heart, unlike so many others, is actually in the right place. He smiles slightly as he thinks about the time they've already shared together. They were all great ones. I love making her laugh. Her sense of humor is like my own and being with her really does make the days seem brighter.'

He thought more on it and his smile faded. 'But, I don't want to hurt her, nor cause her to be hurt. She doesn't deserve that.' He's about to open his mouth when she suddenly continues.

" . . . . I have no issues with facing your past . . the future . . together. You're the brightest thing I've seen in my future for a long time."

He smiles at her as she speaks such kind things to him. He takes a deep breath, making his choice. She at least deserves an explanation after being put through this. Also, the burden he carries is heavy. It would be lighter if he could share it and she seems more than willing. The secret . . . for so many long, dark months, he could not be "himself". He'd done nothing to draw attention to himself. The fact that these two happened upon him. He hoped it was pure chance. They did seem unprepared after all.

Ominus realizes his arms are still around her and he squeezes her once after she speaks, almost as an answer. Then he releases her slowly, reluctantly. Her closeness had felt . . good, warm. "Seri. . . I am thankful to hear those words come from your lips. I feel that you can be trusted, and that I, at least, owe you an explanation about these men. I . . .

He lifts his head. "Wait. Do you hear that?" Ominus touches a finger to her lips to shush her gently. He listens closely as the sound of voices drift down the path toward them - more men?! He steps to the side of Seri and places her behind him in a single motion.

He unsheathes his sword as the men's voices come closer. He whispers quietly to Serendipity, "Go. Hide somewhere . . . It's only me they're after. If they found you on a path they would leave you be."

Seri finds herself pleased as he smiles in response to her comments. He is so handsome when he smiles. She watches him as he speaks.

"Seri. . . I am thankful to hear those words come from your lips. I feel that you can be trusted, and that I, at least, owe you an explanation about these men. I . . . "

As he puts his finger to her lips she purses them in a kiss. Watching his expression for the smile, she's a little surprised to see he's quite serious. Oh . . bloody . .. She does as told, not moving or speaking. He tells her to hide.

Hide? Gah. I can not cope with one more attack like that. Whoever these men are I'll be the death of them. She glares at the ground as she backs up slowly. She looks around herself to see where she might go.

She spies a large rock a bit up the path. She picks up her knife quickly and hurries in quick steps, near the spot where her own captor had been hiding. It really is an ideal spot. She looks back at Julius and nods at him before disappearing behind the rock.

Ominus frowns as she takes her position near the entrance to the small clearing, 'She should have run, we mayn't win this one. Although I really must admire her bravery..' He looks at her, barely visible in her hiding space, and grins 'She's very beautiful, extremely graceful and yet. . strong. Mmm, and that dress..' Ominus shakes his head, returning his thoughts to the matter, and to the sword held in his hand.

And as he does he frowns sadly, almost resignedly - the day which had begun so brightly might now end so dimly. He hopes that Seri will stay hidden, the world cannot afford to lose someone like her. A cloud seems to pass across the sun for Ominus in this moment. He doesn't welcome the touch of death's cold fingers, and yet the thing he regrets most is that he didn't have enough time to get to know this woman better. 'I must win this battle, no matter the odds, for I have found something worth living for'

Walking along the path as he did his regular afternoon patrol of the woods looking out for those damn teens trying to eat some magical mushrooms out in the forest Alistair whistles a tune to himself. He enjoys his life, every afternoon he is paid to walk around the woods and boss about stupid kids and on occasion clap them in irons. Oh fond memories.Walking down the path he stumbles on something falling flat on his face, jumping to his feet again lightning fast and spitting out leaves as he looks around for those damn hooligans who he suspected set a trap up to trip him. Looking down at his feet he sees a lifeless body with another one laying not too far off, his eyes widen and his face turns pale.[/i]

This is not good .....

ooking around again he notices Ominus standing not too far off with an expression of relief on his face as he walks towards him. Feeling the life drain from his legs he stands in fear as Ominus approaches him and he starts trying to explain himself, but his mind is a blank and he does not hear anything Ominus says. Finally coming back to reality he mumbles "I didnt see anything, I swear.... I just happened upon these bodies in the woods.... be on your way I'll have this sorted out."

Ominus sighs in relief as he notices that it is only Alistair on patrol for the town, and not a contingent of the Order's troops. It had sounded like a small group with all the noise Alistair had been making as he'd moved along. Ominus had begun to explain to the white faced Alistair just what he was doing with his sword drawn, but the young lad hadn't seemed to be paying attention. 'The lad's in shock, I do believe..' Frowning slightly Ominus takes another step towards him, and Alistair's eyes suddenly rise, full of fear, to meet his own "I didnt see anything, I swear..... I just happened upon these bodies in the woods...... be on your way......I'll have this sorted out." Ominus watches as Alistair looks confused. "Alistair . . .Wait up a moment! Maybe Seri can explain better.."
Almost as an after thought he sheaths the sword still held in his hand, realizing that it probably doesn't help his reassurances.

Serendipity emerges from the bushes and smiles at Alistair. "Oh, it's good to see you Ali!" She quickly walks up to Alistair and hugs him tight, careful of the knife in her pocket. As she lets go of him, she notices that he barely cringes when she hugs him. Unusual, but a good thing, she tells herself.

"Well, there's nothing to explain. These robbers came out of no where and tried to trap us and well . . . I got lucky. Julius of course can take care of himself." She smiles over at Julius. "It was very impressive Ali."

She walks carefully back to Julius. She stand right next to him, her hand slowly finding his at his side. She finds his hand and grasps it. She looks at him. "The danger is over, but . . my heart is still pounding."

She takes another look at Alistair. He seems a bit stirred but then he smiles and waves them off. I guess he'll take care of the mess then, she thinks. I don't suppose he has to explain anything. He is Alistair after all.

Ominus feels his cheeks grow a little hot as he hears the compliment from Seri "Julius of course can take care of himself...It was very impressive Ali." He stands there thinking for a moment before his pointless musings are interrupted as he feels a hand slips slowly into his; a soft hand, smooth, with slender fingers. As they continue to walk down the path her next words almost cause him to stop in his tracks "The danger is over, but . . my heart is still pounding."

Looking at her for a moment he feels a sudden urge and leans over, kissing her lips gently. After the kiss his lips brush against hers in the lightest of whispers as he speaks quietly, "I'm very proud of your resolve and actions back there."

As he leans in to kiss her, Seri is a bit dazed. When his lips meet hers she feels tingly. Her heart pounds even louder. She instinctively closes her eyes and finds herself leaning into him. When his lips leave hers she gasps for breath. She had forgotten to breathe.

She hears his compliment, but is distracted by how her stomach is tingling. It's as if butterflies have taken flight inside her. She smiles up at him. She puts both of her hands on his shirt and grasps the cloth. She pulls him close to her as he smiles. She puts her arms around his neck and stands on her toes to reach his lips fully. As her lips part she feels his soft lips caress hers. She kisses him slowly and feels her entire body heat up in response.

When their lips finally part she takes a very deep breath and smiles at him. "Wow . . . . I am beyond glad you did that."She feels her face flush. She must be blushing. She grins. She's comfortable with him seeing her blush. Her feelings are a little more obvious now anyway. "Now I have something to show you."

She takes out the knife she had in her pocket and takes a few steps up the hill. She puts it back in the basket, but in the side pocket. She picks up the basket and takes his hand. She smiles at him and pulls him up the slope quickly.

"Please come this way Dear."

Ominus feels her lean closer and smiles a little, glad she wasn't offended by his action. He is a little surprised as her hands grasp his shirt then ease their way around his neck. As she stands on the tips of her toes, he kisses her again, feeling a pleasant thrill course through his body as her moist lips, parted slightly, meet his own. As he moves his lips slowly in response to her tender kiss he feels his heart race.

Ominus blinks and takes her offered hand with a soft smile, his thoughts still upon the feel of her soft lips. As he crests the small slope after her he notices a break appearing in the trees, sunlight filtering through the canopy. The dull noise of cascading water has become louder, a gentle roar. Turning back to the beautiful lady beside him his breath catches in his throat, the sun's rays sparkling upon her hair has caused it to shine radiantly. He looks at her beautiful features for a moment; her sparkling eyes and her red inviting lips capturing his gaze. Ominus forces himself to take a breath, looking back towards the clearing - After the attempt to steady his voice as he asks; "We've Arrived?"

Seri can already hear the waterfall and her body starts to relax. Her pace slows. She takes a deep breath to take in her surroundings. As they near the top the slope the waterfall grows louder and then she sees it through the trees. As they stop walking Julius asks if they're arrived. "Indeed we have. This is my favorite place in the world Julius."

She sees the waterfall clearly but he probably can't unless she points it out. She points in between some trees. "It's right there, my hidden waterfall. This is where I live when I really want to feel alive. It's where I paint, draw and write." She turns and stands right in front of him.

"I'm glad I could share this with you and I'm so glad that we can end our date here. It's a good thing Alistair let us escape, hhmm?" She giggles as she takes his hand again and starts to take him along the small path toward the waterfall and the small clearing she knows is perfect for their picnic.

As they approach the clearing she lets go of his hand and opens her basket.

As she points out the waterfall just visible through the trees he smiles, it really is quite a secluded spot, hidden away from the rest of the world. As she stops suddenly in front of him he almost bumps into her, luckily managing to stop in time to avoid a collision.

"I'm glad I could share this with you and I'm so glad that we can end our date here. It's a good thing Alistair let us escape, hhmm?" He nods in agreement to her question "Aye, it is indeed, he's a good chap" Allowing her to take his hand again he follows after her as they make their way into the clearing. After looking at the waterfall for a moment he turns back to her and his eyebrows rise slightly in approval, Seri is leaning forward taking some food from the basket. The food looks fantastic and he suddenly realizes how hungry he has become. Watching her unload the basket for a little longer he smiles, her long hair falling over her shoulders and dangling over her gorgeous dress create a very attractive sight. "Can I give you a hand with anything?"

Seri looks over her shoulder and suddenly realizes she's not exactly bending over in a lady-like fashion. She laughs as he asks if she needs help. She stands up and smiles at him. She doesn't wink at him. She's too lady like for that.

"You can spread the blanket Dear." She pulls out a small blanket and hands it to him. "Anywhere is fine." She watches him get to work spreading the blanket out and she admires his technique, pulling it just so on the grass as the wind blows toward him.

As he places the blanket and starts to take off a shoe she watches him. He can be so gentle, so detailed . . . this man that fights and loves so ferociously. His shirt is slightly damp from his fight and from the waterfall's humidity. It serves to highlight his amazing chest and shoulders. She thinks about the sword fight she watched. It was amazing. He showed such talent and confidence with that sword in his hands . . . . and this amazing and handsome man has chosen me to date? I just don't believe it. What have I done to deserve him?

Her heart pounds in her chest as she looks at him. She can already tell that her heart has swollen beyond what she had intended. Julius . . . you'd better not break my heart. I couldn't bare it again. She watches him as he carefully removes his shoes and sits cross legged on the cloth. She sighs and smiles, loving the sight. She brings the basket over to him and sets it on the blanket. She begins to take off her own shoes before she sits down.

Ominus grins and looks at the basket "Now, what delicious goods did you bring? That walk has left me ravenous." As Serendipity takes goods from the basket Ominus watches her quietly, a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. 'It's been a long time since I've met someone like this; Beautiful, smart, kind and with a great sense of humor even.. and, boy, can she kiss! And despite that rough beginning she's still willing to continue the date.' Ominus looks around the clearing, the rays of the low afternoon sun are casting long shadows across the grass around the base of the waterfall. He turns and looks at her hand resting upon the blanket, supporting herself as she leans forward, taking a few delicious looking food goods from the basket. He reaches over and places his right hand lightly upon hers, looking tenderly into the beautiful eyes she lifts to meet his. "That first day in the tavern; your beauty stole my eyes, but now your personality and passion have stole my heart." As she breaks eye contact, and looks down towards their hands, Ominus gently lifts her chin with his left hand, leaning over to softly kiss her lips once again...

The End
 . . . Of The Beginning

The First Fall of Ayr
Serendipity skips into the Jolly Taxpayer. Come outside Honey. I have something to show you. She smiles as he gets up and takes her hand.

As they walk outside he sees her gift; an adorable retriever pup.

Ominus smiles and, closing his eyes, lets her lead him outside. As he hears a quiet little bark he opens his eyes, and his smile grows wider, as he pulls Seri into an embrace and kisses her cheek "Aww, thank you, m'dear"

Ominus kneels down and takes the pup into his arms and look at it "I'm going to call you.. Lucky Jewel - In memory of what a Lucky man I am to have a Jewel like this woman by my side." Laughing as the puppy licks his face, he thinks also of the play it is on their names also - Jewel and Julius, Lucky and Serendipity.

Walking back to Seri he gives her another hug and smiles, his eyes shining brightly.
