Serendipity Chapter 2

Serendipity took in the sweet smell of lavender, and cherry blossoms. Her long dark locks were mostly down and flowed around her in a whirlwind. The north was often cold, but on this autumn day it was warm, with a cool breeze. It was her favorite kind of weather. She often rode inside the carriage, but today was a special day, and she wanted to be up front in order to witness everything firsthand.  Her excitement had been building up for a while.

She was moving and she had good reasons to do so; three good reasons to be specific. The first was her independent spirit. She wanted to be away from her family home for so long. Her father had grown more and more nervous about marrying her off. The man had already proposed a couple of matches for young Seri, and so far she had been able to reject them for good enough reasons. However, she wasn't sure her father would ever choose someone truly worthy of her.  She had never really wanted to marry for wealth or for station. She wanted love, and she was serious about the prospect.

This brought her thoughts to the second reason for moving far away: Julius. The handsome, strapping, charming and well spoken gentleman had actually extended his stay in Kirkcudbright to spend time with her. She was just a server at the Dew Drop Inn Restaurant, but Julius had always seen her as more than that. His encouragement was a breath of fresh air in this world that was so hostile and straight laced.

The day he walked into her life, she knew she had to know him better. He appeared one night and ordered nothing but a beer. He was somewhat silent, but also clever and mysterious - all at the same time. Now that she knew him better, she didn't even know how he'd pulled off his dark, mysterious aura. The peek and then the smile that he shot her from under his dark hood had almost tripped her literally when she delivered his beer to the table. She smiled and curtsied, and then tried to ignore him. It hadn't worked. The more they didn't speak to each other that night, the more magnetic his personality appeared.

Night after night he came in and ordered a single beer. Each night he revealed a little more about himself. Seri did the same. Within a week she was dreaming of his lips and how she could get her arms around him. She would say to herself that she loved him, but she didn't know what love was. She just knew she had to be around him, and as often as possible. Julius was going to meet her here, in Girvan.  This is why she was anxious, excited and self conscious all at the same time. Did he miss her? Did he keep the beard he had? Would he remember when she was coming?

She sighed as they turned another corner. The town was not in sight yet. While she loved the scenery, she hated waiting.

Ayr county was beautiful and she was happy to return to it. She'd not been this far north for a long time, but she knew she had to come. Ayr needed her. It needed people to pick up the pieces. It needed leaders, lovers, politicians and hard workers. She was all these things. Well, inside she thought she was. She knew she was good for Ayr.  Without help it would all fall into disrepair, and she wasn't sure she could handle the guilt if she didn't go. This had been the reason she gave her parents, and this was truly the most passionate need for her. She needed to go, with or without other family members.

Ayr had been burned, pillaged and destroyed to such a severe degree that it awed her. The wake and devastation was not anything the Scottish had seen in her lifetime.  Sere had visited Ayr capital before the attack, and it had been so lovely and beautiful. Seeing the death, sorrow, and destruction had really affected her. When she first travelled to the capital after the attack she witnessed so much mourning and sadness. The busy, thriving capital now felt more empty, and emotionally hollow. She promised her friend, the mayor of Ayr City, Wandress that she would soon return. She also promised to bring resources to help rebuild the capital.  To her surprise, the only thing asked of her was that she take over as Mayor when she returned.  She didn't have to think about it.  Wandress had held the town together in the wake of everything, and had never had a chance to mourn. It was the very least that she could do, for this town and for the woman who had done so much for her people. While she had never run a town before, she did have some political experience. She had already been a town mentor, and a councilwoman in her home town, and her father had taught her many things about how economies worked.

Seri believed that Julius was also eager to make positive changes. He didn't have the same ideation that she did, but she knew that he would be a great asset. She was looking forward to seeing exactly what kind of man he would be when he stepped up to a challenge.

As they approached the town she saw the buildings rise into view. It was a sight to see: the little town of Girvan. She saw a tall, dark figure standing in front of the Hotel. She grinned.

Her driver laughed, "Look at that smile.  The man has probably been waiting for you all day." Seri felt heat on her cheeks, and knew she would be blushing now. Silly driver!!

Seri did not point out the fact that a big smile graced her face as well. She cleared her throat, " Yes. Perhaps. " The silhouette changed as they approached.  His smile grew, if it were at all possible, and his stance grew taller in his boots. The man had already done many things to win her affections, but while he could have waited inside or at the bar, here he was, standing here. . .

She wasn't incredibly surprised, but she was very pleased . . and she missed him so much that had the roles been reversed, she would have waited all day too.

He reached for her hand as the carriage came to a stop. She chimed playfully, "Did ye miss me Luv?"

He chuckled, "More than one could miss the moon or stars." When he had a chance to do so, he pulled her close, and then kissed her hand gently. His beard tickled her fingers, and she stood on her tip toes to bestow a kind kiss on his cheek. She hid it with a whisper, "And I've missed you . . greatly."  She could tell he wanted to kiss her, but they were in public, and he always treated her like a proper lady in public, even if she didn't act like the most proper lady.

Seri wished every day that her father would forget that she existed, and today she felt like it was her first step to moving on.  She was moving on - and not alone.  'After all' she thought, 'father has other sons and daughters to worry about. Perhaps in time he would forget about her. 'Out of sight. Out of mind.'  She grinned cleverly, as Julius escorted her inside.
